I’m sure we are all sick and tired with having to send work home either by email attachment or transferring work using a USB drive. Keeping up to date with the current version of the work can become extremely difficult and tedious.
Times are about to change with Microsoft unveiling its new web service called “
Live Mesh”. Currently Mesh is running as a test version which is currently an invite only service, giving 10,000 windows live users access to the service. Live Mesh is securely password protected (
SSL) which requires windows live username and password to sign in.
This new web service will enable connection of all Microsoft technologies. This new
technology will enable data synchronisation across multiple devices. Currently the beta version will synchronise only computers that have the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating system, however in the near future the ability to access MAC operating systems, mobile devices and much more will be included.
The new platform experience will be controlled remotely via an online desktop.
The online desktop will display all files (up to a maximum of 5GB at present) that have been added to the “Mesh” from numerous different devices. This will include files, folders and even programs to be accessed remotely.
The Live Mesh will also give the user the ability to share files, folders and programs with other users who have access to the service. In order to keep up to date with alterations that are made to documents, a news update is created (viewable through the mesh bar). All activities and news relating to the shared documents will be viewable. For example, it will be possible to display members who are currently accessing the file/folder, enable members to post comments about the file/folder.
I am looking forward to try out this new
technology as in the long run, such a service could be a real time saver. Worrying about keeping documents up to date will become a thing of the past.
